70% of Produce Sold in US is Contaminated With Pesticides, Even After You Wash It
by Elias Marat
Posted April 20, 2019
If you’re buying fresh fruits and vegetables in the United States, 70 percent of it will carry pesticide residues on it even after you’ve washed it, according to a new study from a widely-respected health advocacy group.
The Environmental Working Group’s annual analysis of U.S. Department of Agriculture data offers grim evidence of the over-saturation of pesticides and toxic chemicals in conventional agriculture in the United States, with top crops such as spinach and strawberries counting among the most contaminated produce.
The group hopes the report will inform shoppers of the risks inherent in buying and consuming conventionally-grown produce versus organic fruits and vegetables. More…
Changing Societies through Urban Commons Transitions
by Michel Bauwens,
Posted April 18, 2019
In the context of this report, the commons are viewed as a shared resource, which is co-owned and/or co-governed by its users and/or stakeholder communities, according to its own rules and norms.
Defined in such a manner it is clearly distinguishable from both the private and public/state forms of managing and owning resources. Commons can be found in every social arrangement, in every region and time period. This wider framework allows us to see the re-emergence of urban commons in our particular historical conjuncture.
To begin with, tribal societies as well as the class-based societies that emerged before capitalism have relatively strong commons, and they are essentially the natural commons. They co-exist with the more organic culturally inherited commons, such as folk knowledge. These are social systems that do not systematically separate people from their means of livelihood. More…
13 Ways of Looking at Community
by Parker J. Palmer
Posted May 12, 2019
Whether we know it or not, like it or not, honor it or not, we are embedded in community. Whether we think of ourselves as biological creatures or spiritual beings or both, the truth remains: we were created in and for a complex ecology of relatedness, and without it we wither and die. This simple fact has critical implications: community is not a goal to be achieved but a gift to be received.
When we treat community as a product that we must manufacture instead of a gift we have been given, it will elude us eternally. When we try to “make community happen,” driven by desire, design, and determination—places within us where the ego often lurks—we can make a good guess at the outcome: we will exhaust ourselves and alienate each other, snapping the connections we yearn for.
Too many relationships have been diminished or destroyed by a drive toward “community-building” which evokes a grasping that is the opposite of what we need to do: relax into our created condition and receive the gift we have been given. More…
This man will help you get out of expensive medical bills
by Emma Court
Posted April 11, 2019
As the father of four sports-playing children, David Silverstein has long grappled with the high cost of hospital care. “There’s always a bill for something,” he said, laughing.
But something changed years ago when he received an emergency room bill for his then-high school-aged daughter, Kailey. The total came to $12,000, but Silverstein’s portion came in just under $1,000. Despite a background in health care — Silverstein has worked with hospitals and insurance companies for years through his management consulting business — he was flummoxed by the math. The 92% discount may have benefited him, but it also seemed arbitrary and confusing, he said.
But after he paid the bill, he couldn’t get the hospital to respond to his questions. So he decided not to make that mistake again. More…
Most hospitals, including the so called non-profits do not publish their costs for procedures and services leaving people in the dark about what their health care will cost them.
Consider how you would react if you went to any other business and they would not tell you how much their products or services would cost. Why do we tolerate this from hospitals?
A Spiritual Teacher is running for President
by Marianne Williamson
Posted March 31, 2019
A principle of personal transformation is that you can’t bring light to the darkness; you have to bring darkness to the light. This means you can’t pretend certain things aren’t happening, when in fact they are. Only when we face our problems squarely in the eye will we be able to deal with them.
I am running for president because I believe America needs to have a deeply honest conversation with itself. There are many things happening that we need to look squarely in the eye.
We need to look at the hard human realties that lay beyond economic statistics. We need to look at the fact that 41 million people go to bed hungry every night in this, the richest country in the world. We need to look at the fact that scientists tell us we have 12 years left to make radical changes in order to stave off the worst consequences of the climate crisis. We need to look at the fact that millions of American children attend school each day in classrooms without adequate school supplies. We need to look at the fact that our government too often makes it easier for the very rich to get richer, yet harder for millions of people to even make it at all. We need to look at the fact that for every thousand dollars we spend preparing for war, we spend only a dollar on efforts to create peace. And the list goes on.
You will not see me distracting your attention from the problems we need to face, glossing over them, or pretending they’re not as bad as they are. This campaign gets real about our problems so we can get serious about solutions. But you will find me reminding you, as I remind you now, that we are going to deal with all of these problems… because we can. Within us all there is infinite wisdom, and our country has the capacity to rise to every challenge that confronts us. More…
The political system is corrupt and needs a total restructuring.
Perhaps it is time to think “out of the box” and look to elect candidates that are completely outside of the system and come from a background of honesty, compassion and spirituality? Why We Should Tax Nonprofit Hospitals
by David Silverstein
Posted March 29, 2019
The large nonprofit hospital systems in the US essentially print money these days. Many run double-digit profit margins. Some exceed 20%. Most tax-paying businesses would kill for such margins.
About 60% of US hospitals are nonprofits. In 2017 alone, they collectively earned $21 billion on their investment portfolios, yet they like to tell us that paying taxes would deprive them of the very profit they need to do good work for their communities. At best, that is circular logic. At its worst, it’s a bold-faced lie.
So, while approximately 3,900 hospitals are designated as nonprofits, many of them are highly profitable. What a farce. If they were doing such good things, they wouldn’t have such high profits. Do you see the problem with this reasoning? More…
How Individuals Can Reset The Financial System
By Tom Chatham
Posted March 28, 2019
We have often heard the predictions that the currency system will be reset at some point when the bankers can no longer keep the current ponzi scheme going. The current scheme involves the ability of the bankers to convince the population that pieces of paper rolling off a machine or digits created on a computer screen are real wealth. The education system has been successful in that regard.
Very few people actually understand what real wealth is or anything about economics. They have been led to believe that these things are too complicated for them to understand and it should be left to the experts. These same experts get richer as everyone else gets poorer. That is the way they have rigged the system. More…
The Facts: People will spend a significant portion of their lives working for those green pieces of paper and yet have little or no understanding of how those pieces of paper come into existance and who benefits from this system.
Reflect On: How we the people can bypass this rigged system and make these money changers obsolete by simply changing how we use and accept money.
5G “May Be A Global Health Catastrophe” – Journalist Educates Orlando City Council
By Arjun Walia
Posted March 26, 2019
Well, the health consequences of 5G are very real and very well-documented by hundreds of scientists and health professionals, as proven by thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies published in various journals.
Martin L. Pall, PhD and Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University, recently outlined in a new report the many health risks associated with 5G technology and wireless radiation in general. You can access that report and read more about it here. By clicking the link, you can also watch his presentation during the “Health in Buildings Roundtable,” sponsored by the NIH and co-organized by the US CDC and several other organizations, where he concluded that the “5G rollout is absolutely insane.” More…
The Facts: Justin Harvey, an activist based out of Orlando, Florida, recently shared the concerns many people around the world have with the implementation of 5G technology with Orlando City Council members.
Reflect On: There are thousands of peer-reviewed studies and hundreds of scientists showing that this is truly a dangerous step for human health. Why do these technologies continue to be approved without any safety testing at all when it’s clearly warranted?
